Your hiring assessment is not working
Last updated: October 16, 2026
A company you have applied to has asked you to complete a Solidroad simulation. This covers what to do if the call will not start, if the person on the call cannot hear you, or if you cannot get into your assessment at all. Most of it comes back to your microphone. The rest is usually your browser, or where you are sitting when you take it.
Getting into the assessment and completing it is covered in Completion guide for candidates.
Symptoms
You can hear the person on the call, but they do not reply to anything you say.
They reply once and then go quiet.
The call never connects after you press Start.
Your browser never asks for microphone access.
You open the link from your invitation but cannot get into your assessment.
Start by asking whether you can hear them
If you can hear the other person speak, the assessment has loaded and your internet is working. If it were your connection, the call would not have started at all. What is happening is that your microphone is not reaching us, so the other person has nothing to respond to. Work through the microphone checks below.
If you hear nothing at all and the call never connects, go to the browser and location checks instead.
Check your microphone
Work through these in order.
Allow microphone access when your browser asks. If you closed that prompt earlier, your browser will keep blocking it until you change the setting. Camera or microphone blocked in your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) shows you where.
Check the right microphone is selected. If you are wearing a headset, your computer may still be listening through its built-in microphone.
Check your headset is not muted. Many headsets have a mute button on the cable or the earcup that your computer cannot see.
Close anything else that uses your microphone, such as Teams, Zoom, Slack or Discord, then refresh the page.
Test your microphone somewhere else. Start a meeting in Google Meet and watch the microphone level on the audio check screen, or open https://test.webrtc.org and run the test. This page is made by Google, not by Solidroad. If your microphone does not register there either, the problem is your device rather than the assessment.
Once your microphone is working, refresh the page and start the assessment again.
Make sure you can be heard clearly
Your answers are transcribed as you speak, so anything that muddies your audio can affect how the conversation goes.
Sit somewhere quiet, with the door closed if you can. Background conversation and traffic noise both end up in the recording.
Use a wired headset if you have one. A laptop's built-in microphone picks up far more of the room.
Speak at your normal pace and volume, close enough to the microphone to be heard without leaning in.
Check your browser
Use Google Chrome if you can.
If the call still will not start, open the assessment link in a private or incognito window, or in a different browser. A browser extension or a saved setting is often the cause, and both are skipped in a private window.
On a phone or tablet, see Unblock your camera/microphone on mobile (Android and iOS).
Check where you are taking it
Take the assessment on your own device, on your home wi-fi.
Work laptops and office networks often block the kind of live call the assessment uses, and you will not be able to change that yourself. The same goes for a VPN, or public wi-fi in a cafe or an airport. If you are on any of those, switch to a personal device and your home connection.
Sit close to your router, and if your connection drops, a phone hotspot usually works.
If you cannot get into your assessment
Enter the same email address the invitation was sent to. Signing up with a different address stops your account linking to the assessment. Capital letters do not matter.
If you have taken this assessment before and the link will not reopen it, the company that invited you needs to clear your earlier attempt before you can start again. Contact them directly.
If that doesn't work
Tell the company that invited you, and include:
What you saw on screen, and the exact wording of any message.
The date and time you tried, and your timezone.
Whether you could hear the other person speak.
Your browser, and whether you were on a computer or a phone.
How long it took to fail after you pressed Start.
They can pass this to Solidroad. If you can get to the end of the assessment and finish it, even badly, say so, because a completed attempt gives us something to check.
